Designed by two Arts and Crafts architects, Cecil Brewer and Arthur Smith, in 1900. It was first occupied in March 1901 by Ambrose Heal (1872-1959), who
became Chairman of the family furnishing firm in Tottenham Court Road, London, in 1913. He was knighted for services to furniture design in 1933.
His first wife died soon after moving into the house; his second wife was a keen suffragette.
