MAIN MEETINGS PROGRAMME
2025
6th February - The Metropolitan Railway during the First World War, Richard Dennis
When World War I broke out in 1914 the Metropolitan railway was made subject to government control. It lost staff to military service and women were employed. The City Widened Lines assumed major strategic importance as a link between the channel ports and the north for troop movements and freight.
6th March - Local Road Transport Through the Ages, PLHS Research Group
The Pinner Local History Society Research Group will present research into the history of road transport in Pinner and the surrounding areas. It will include stagecoaches, horse and motor buses, commercial haulage and private vehicles.
10th April - Horatia in Pinner, Lily Style
The talk will explore how Lord Nelson’s only daughter chose to end her days obscurity in Pinner. The talk will be presented by Lily Styles, Horatia’s 3rd great-granddaughter and founder of the Emma Hamilton Society.
1st May - The PLHS AGM, followed by The Oily History of Margarine by Michael Clarke
Michael’s talk will cover of the invention of margarine in 1869 by French chemist Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès in response to a contest held by Emperor Napoleon III. It will preceded by the Society’s AGM.
5th June - A Grand Pinner Household in the 1760s, Thamar MacIver
Thamar will explore a diary kept at The Hall in Pinner, home to James Grenville MP. His brothers included the owner of Stowe and the Prime Minister. For us, the main interest is the glimpses of Pinner life – the fair, chalk pits, a stagecoach service, a post lady, and journeys to London, once though floods.
Meetings take place at Pinner Village Hall, Chapel Lane Car Park, Pinner, HA5 1AA, and begin at 8.00pm (Thursdays).
Visitors are very welcome: suggested donation £3.
