Arthur W J G Ord-Hume
As many of you will be aware, Arthur W J G Ord-Hume died in May 2024. He will be known to many members as a regular contributor to our Newsletter usually drawing on his recollections of his early life here in Pinner and Hatch End.
Later in life he became a prolific writer, his subjects revealing his many and varied interests. Of most relevant to us were his books on the history of Pinner and in particular Hatch End. In his writings he drew on his own extensive resources including what he described as a huge collection of pictures, books and ephemera, his own photographs (some illicitly taken during World War II) and his own and his father’s diaries.

The Auction
An auction of his extensive library was held on Tuesday, 14 April 2026. Roy Jakes, Michael Treisman and Thamar MacIver travelled to Haslemere on the Saturday prior to the auction to view the material and decide what items would be valuable additions to our archives.

The Lots Purchased
Following our visit we decided to place bids for 6 lots containing items relating to Pinner and Hatch End. Of the 6, we were successful in obtaining 4 lots. The 2 we failed to obtain went for over £450 and whilst there were items in them we were interested in, they were beyond our budget. However we have since been in touch with the person who was successful, a former Pinner resident, and will be discussing specific items of interest with him later.
After we receive the lots we have purchased we will be reviewing them with interest for inclusion into our archive collection.
